Healing the Sick
Rome First UMC is involved in two healing ministries in our community: The Free Clinic and the National Alliance for Mental Illness.
The Free Clinic
The Free Clinic is a ministry started through Rome First UMC in 2003 that has grown into its own non-profit organization. Through this ministry, healthcare professionals provide free, quality healthcare to those that cannot afford it. Presently, the Free Clinic is open on Monday and Thursday evenings, and also on Friday mornings. Local doctors and nurses are needed as volunteers to provide care and non-medical volunteers are needed as receptionists and for administrative support.
In 2010, the free clinic accomplished the following:
- Provided more than 2,666 medical, dental, and vision visits
- 332 new patients were enrolled during 2010
- Filled more than 1,100 prescriptions for treatment of primary care conditions
- Facilitated enrollment of eligible patients in pharmaceutical company patient assistance programs allowing patients to receive more than $180,000 in needed medicines at no cost.
Several Rome First UMC members, both medical and non-medical, volunteer regularly with this ministry. The church also supports this ministry financially.
The Free Clinic is located at 315 West 10th St., Rome, GA 30165. For more information on the Free Clinic, click here.
National Alliance for Mental Illness
The National Alliance for Mental Illness (NAMI) is open to all individuals with mental illness and their families and/or caretakers. NAMI Rome provides monthly educational meetings, peer support group, family support group, family education course (Family to Family), peer education course (Peer to Peer), annual picnic, and annual Christmas Party.
NAMI meets at Rome First UMC on Monday Evenings at 6:00 pm in the Lounge to the left of the Wilder Center entrance. In addition to hosting regular meetings, church members help with hospitality at NAMI social functions. For more information on NAMI click here.
