In 2001 Rome FUMC started a contemporary service called On The Way @ 9:45. The service was geared toward younger families and college students but designed to be welcoming to everyone who wanted to come.
In early 2006 the contemporary service switched to 11 a.m. and has been growing ever since.
The praise band for the contemporary service has seen many changes in band members since its formation. In 2008, members of the band figured that it was time to decide on a name for the group since they were playing outside the church more and more often. Several names were considered, but they picked "coveredindust" based on an idea a couple of the members had after watching one of the Rob Bell Nooma videos. The video talked about a phrase that developed among rabbi's apprentices; "May you be covered in the dust of your rabbi." The group thought this was a good fit because their main purpose in leading worship was to follow closely behind Jesus and to encourage others to do the same.
